When I first sat in my optometrist’s chair for a routine eye exam, I assumed 20/20 vision was the gold standard—the best possible eyesight. But after testing dozens of patients over the years, I’ve learned that’s not the whole story. 20/20 vision simply means you see objects clearly at 20 feet, which is considered normal visual acuity. It doesn’t mean your vision is perfect, and it’s not even the sharpest possible. In fact, about 35% of people have 20/20 vision without glasses, while others see better (like 20/15) or worse (like 20/40).
